An extract from Chapter One…
I should’ve been enjoying the spectacle in the Rue des Marchands, but I was having serious trouble.
Grampi and I wove through the hectic crowd of medieval-garbed soldiers, tourists and fae in the merchants’ street that formed the spine of the Festival of Charlemagne. Display areas, canvas tents and awnings lined both sides of the thoroughfare. Guy ropes thrummed in a breeze that scudded clouds across the blue and rippled my medieval tunic but barely cooled my skin.
The festival really was quite something, celebrating King Charlemagne’s victory over the Saracens in these meadows at the bottom of Tarascon in 778. It seemed no one cared that the battle probably hadn’t happened right here, and there hadn’t actually been a victory. It was more likely the king had been ambushed by a load of Basques deep in the mountains. But that didn’t matter because it was part of the town’s mythos.
Besides, it was an opportunity once every five years to wield some nasty weaponry without being incarcerated. That worm of anger you had against Rodrigo from accounts for stealing your stapler could be healthily explored by bludgeoning him. Not to mention, you could consume plenty of wine or beer with the legitimate excuse that the hard stuff was the sole drink of past times. The three-day festival wasn’t an inebriated haze, it was a medieval experience. Above all, the influx of tourists for the occasion was an essential boost to the local economy, which was as good a justification as any.
If you’ve requested an audio review copy…
Audible’s processing of audiobooks is notoriously unpredictable, meaning I never know how long the last step of production will take. They’ve finally finished their side of things, but… I’m on holiday for the week! If I get a moment, I’ll send copies out to you, but otherwise, you’re looking at very early next week.
